Heart Attack in Women

According to Mayo Clinic, a heart attack happens when the flow of blood to the heart gets blocked. Also known as a myocardial infarction, can be fatal and affects both men and women. However, when it happens to women, the risks are higher and are often life-threatening. We tell you why it is more dangerous for a woman to survive a heart attack when compared to men.

The symptoms

The most common symptom of a heart attack in both males and females is chest pain and discomfort. It can vary from a dull persistent ache to tightness and pressure. However, what makes the case unique for women is the fact that women can experience a heart attack even if they don’t have any chest discomfort.

Unusual fatigue

If a woman has been unusually or extremely tired for a long period, you have to rush her to a doctor. It could be the warning sign of a heart attack. Weakness, unexplained anxiety and feeling lightheaded should also be taken as a warning sign. Shortness of breath and excessive sweating without an exertion could also spell trouble. If these symptoms are coupled with sleep disturbances too, you should not avoid a visit to the doctor.

Upper body pain

Sudden pain in the neck, jaw or hands or pain that starts in one area and spreads to other parts could also be one of the symptoms of heart trouble

The female biology creates some unique risk factors too. Polycystic Ovary disease increases the risk rate. The risk of heart attack post-menopause due to falling estrogen levels also adds to the woes in women.

What you have to keep in mind is the fact that the symptoms of heart attack are not similar in two people. Each person is a unique case.
